A Proposal for Early Math Education

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 19 September 2012 | 21.27

Read "Operation Sense, Tool-Based Pedagogy, Circular Breadth: A Proposal," a chapter from a book by Henri Picciotto, noted mathematics teacher and curriculum developer. He believes that math instruction in elementary school needs to include more than just arithmetic, important as that may be. He gives many examples of how to teach operation sense. A firm believer in the use of manipulatives, he shows ways to use them, and how they can spark conversation about mathematic principles. One of the sections of this chapter deals with "fun" math, which includes several ways to use pattern blocks, tangrams, pentominoes, and geoboards. His conclusion makes for especially thought-provoking arguments.

Track Your Spending: Track-o-matic

Written By Unknown on Senin, 17 September 2012 | 21.05

The Investor Education Fund produced this short video that tracks how much money we might spend on ATM fees, coffee, and take-out food.  This is a video not only for teenagers to help them think about their purchases, but for us all. Do we really want to spend $3000 a year on coffee? There are links to ways to create a balanced budget and a video on how to save money, which is a great adjunct to tracking your spending.

Constitution Day: Alabama Literacy Test

Today is Constitution Day. There is no better day to examine how the meaning of the Constitution was perverted to undermine voting rights than to use this lesson plan that provides the Alabama Literacy Test which African Americans were required to pass prior to the enactment of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Read about the various voting regulations that kept African Americans from exercising their right to vote until 1965. Portions of the Voting Act are included in the lesson as well as President Lyndon Johnson's speech on March 15, 1965, where he tells Congress that he is sending a law to Congress that will remove all illegal barriers to the right to vote.  The lesson plan includes necessary documents, background information, and a procedure to implement the lesson.
